The Stop Insider Trading Act does not stop insider trading.
Don't fall for the scam.
Yesterday, H.R. 7008, The Stop Insider Trading Act, was discussed in the House Rules Committee and it will soon be brought to the floor for a vote.
But H.R. 7008 is a scam.
Let’s break it down.
H.R. 7008 was introduced earlier this year as a counter to H.R. 5106, the Restore Trust in Congress Act. H.R. 5106 has 141 cosponsors - 35 Republicans and 106 Democrats - and bans members of Congress and their dependents from buying, selling, and owning individual stocks. The Stop Insider Trading Act does almost none of that.
Here’s the key section:
In this bill, “covered individuals” include members of Congress and their dependents but, as you can see, the only restrictions on those individuals are:
Purchasing individual stocks
…
that’s it…
What is NOT included:
A ban on selling individual stocks
A ban on holding individual stocks
A ban on trading cryptocurrency
Under H.R. 7008, the Stop Insider Trading Act, members of Congress can still do all sorts of insider trading.
