What the Supreme Court just did.

And how we can fight back.

In 1974, Congress passed the FECA amendments, a suite of campaign finance regulations written in direct response to the Watergate scandal.

Now, with Watergate-sized campaign finance scandals failing to even make a page six headline, the Supreme Court decided to carve another hole in our paltry regulatory regime.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court sided with the National Republican Senatorial Committee to remove all limits on political party coordination with candidates. In practice, this will render contribution limits near-useless.

How does it work?

In federal elections, individual donor’s can give up to $7,000 per cycle directly to a candidate and up to $132,900 per year to each party account - RNC, NRSC, NRCC, etc... In an election cycle (two years,) an individual donor can give up to $700,000 to a party apparatus. Until today, parties were limited in how much they could spend in direct coordination with a candidate, falling anywhere between $65,300 - $130,600 for House candidates and $130,600 - $4,071,800 for Senate candidates.

Now, those limits are non-existent.

How will it impact money in politics?

While there are functionally still limits to how much donors can directly give to a candidate, wealthy donors can now circumvent those restrictions by giving through a party. Instead of being limited to a $7,000 contribution, individuals can now contribute up to $700,000 to the Democratic or Republican party’s bank account and have that be earmarked for their candidate of choice.

For all intents and purposes, individuals can now give up to $700,000 directly to a candidate each election cycle. Because there are still some limits, Super PACs that receive million-dollar checks will still be prominent fixtures in our political environment, but the writing is on the wall and the wild west of campaign finance law is only becoming more lawless.

What can we do?

In short: win.

The only way to fix money in politics is for an anti-corruption coalition to win - and win big.

We now have over 50 candidates that will be on the ballot in November who have taken the Political Integrity Pledge to fix our broken and corrupt system.

Lets get them into office.
